What is a Domain Rating?

Ahrefs' Domain Rating is one of the most recognized authority metrics in the SEO industry. It builds on earlier approaches like Page Authority and Domain Authority. A higher rating signals that a website has a strong reputation and is more credible to search engines.

The factors that feed DR include backlink quantity and quality, domain age, social signals and other inputs. Ahrefs gives every domain a 0 to 100 score. A free version of the tool lets you check Domain Rating with limited functionality.

Why should I worry about my Domain Rating?

A strong DR suggests a healthy site reputation, but building it takes time and consistent work. The score also reacts to your peers. If competitors are gaining quality links faster than you are, your DR may stall even when your own profile is growing.

How do I spot a manipulated Domain Rating?

A manipulated DR shows up as irrelevant backlinks. Open the top referring domains and ask whether each placement makes sense for the site. Random unrelated placements are a tell. So are clusters of links from the same network or anchors that have nothing to do with the brand.
