Search engine
A search engine helps you find webpages relevant to your query. Here is how they work, which ones lead in the Netherlands, and how to advertise inside them.

What is a search engine?
A search engine is an automated system that scans the internet for information and shows it back to you in a useful form. Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo are the well known ones. They serve both paid and organic results.
Early search engines worked purely on keyword matching. Modern engines index images, video and audio alongside text.
The quality of the result depends on your query
Most engines offer dropdown menus and filters to refine searches by content type (news, images, videos) and criteria (location, date, file size, popularity).
- Website search: find content on specific sites
- Page search: find information inside individual webpages
- Image search: find content through visual references
Which search engines are most popular?
Google dominates globally. Bing, DuckDuckGo (privacy focused), Ask, Jeeves and Yandex serve specific audiences. Each one has its own ranking signals and its own user base.
Which search engines are most popular in the Netherlands?
Google holds nearly 40% of Dutch searches. Bing follows at around 17.5%. Ecosia and Ilse hold smaller but loyal user bases.
How to use a search engine well
Pick precise keywords that match the language of the page you expect to find. Watch for misspellings. Be specific. "Lemon blueberry bread" gives you a better result than "bread".
How to improve your search results
Tighten the query. Add a year, a location, a brand. Use quotes for exact match phrases. Use minus to exclude noise. Most engines accept these operators.
How to advertise in the search results
Businesses can buy ad placement through Google Ads and Bing's advertising platform. Both serve placements inside the search results themselves, above or below the organic listings.
