Why Suitable does show up in ChatGPT
Suitable ranks number three in ChatGPT for men's clothing in the Netherlands. But only for some questions. Here is what the data says about why.
ChatGPT result citing Suitable as a recommended men's clothing store
Suitable is one of the best known men's fashion retailers in the Netherlands. Physical stores in Amsterdam, Oisterwijk and other cities, plus a webshop at suitableshop.nl. A broad audience looking for quality menswear.
How visible is Suitable in the new world of AI search? We looked at Suitable's ChatGPT visibility in the Dutch menswear market using Ahrefs Brand Radar. The pattern was unexpected.
1. Suitable scores surprisingly high in ChatGPT
We compared Share of Voice (SOV) for six menswear brands in ChatGPT answers for the Dutch market.
| Brand | Mentions | Share of Voice |
|---|---|---|
| Profuomo | 4 | 3.0% |
| Zalando | 17 | 2.3% |
| Suitable | 11 | 2.2% |
| Suitsupply | 8 | 0.7% |
| WE Fashion | 8 | 0.4% |
| Van Gils | 2 | 0.2% |
Suitable is in third place, above Suitsupply, WE Fashion and Van Gils. For a brand much smaller than Zalando or Suitsupply, that is a strong position. The data tells a more nuanced story once you look at which questions Suitable appears on.
2. Where exactly does Suitable appear
We analyzed every ChatGPT prompt where Suitable is mentioned or cited. The pattern is clear.
Branded and navigational questions
| ChatGPT prompt | Search volume | Suitable cited? |
|---|---|---|
| What are the opening hours of Suitable Herenmode? | 7,446 | Yes, with link |
| How many stores does Suitable have? | 6,406 | Yes, with link |
| How do I return something at Suitable? | 6,406 | Yes, with link |
| Who is the owner of Suitable? | 6,293 | Yes, with link |
Category questions
| ChatGPT prompt | Search volume | Suitable cited? |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the best place to buy men's clothing? | 1,335 | Yes, recommended as a store |
| How far in advance should you buy a suit? | 1,470 | Yes, blog post cited as a source |
Product specific questions (where it falls apart)
| ChatGPT prompt | Search volume | Suitable cited? |
|---|---|---|
| Where can I buy a wrinkle free shirt? | 1,195 | No. Only for Men, Labfresh, iKAL |
| What are the best travel fabric brands? | 5,503 | No |
| Which men's pants brands are there? | 5,284 | No |
| Is Profuomo a Dutch brand? | 18,269 | Indirectly, as a source, not as a recommendation |
Pattern: Suitable shows up in ChatGPT when you ask where to buy menswear, and disappears when you ask about specific products.
3. Why this gap: the store brand vs the knowledge brand
To understand why Suitable appears on some prompts and not others, you have to look at how ChatGPT selects sources.
On the prompt "Where is the best place to buy men's clothing?", ChatGPT answers:
"Suitable Amsterdam. Classic and modern menswear with special attention to well fitting suits and stylish outfits."
The cited sources are revealing: amsterdamsights.com (a city guide with shopping tips) and suitableshop.nl/suitable-amsterdam/ (the store page). ChatGPT treats Suitable here as a location, a place you can visit.
On "Where can I buy a wrinkle free shirt?" ChatGPT cites:
- Only for Men: a help desk article explaining what a wrinkle free shirt actually is
- Labfresh: product page with technical explanation
- iKAL: dedicated landing page for strijkvrij overhemd
These are sources that explain the topic, not just sell the product.
"ChatGPT knows Suitable as a store (via directories, city guides). It does not know Suitable as a knowledge source for specific product categories."
4. The data behind the pattern
Which sources does ChatGPT cite in the menswear niche?
Trade press and review sites dominate. FashionUnited, RetailTrends, Trustpilot and Wikipedia drive the majority of citations. These are exactly the sources ChatGPT treats as trusted.
Suitableshop.nl sits at #15 with 25 citations. Not bad. But almost all of them are navigational (opening hours, returns, store pages), not substantive product citations.
How does this compare to SEO performance?
| Metric | Google (Ahrefs) | ChatGPT (Brand Radar) |
|---|---|---|
| Domain Rating | 28 (down from 40) | โ |
| Organic traffic (NL) | 291 per month | โ |
| Share of Voice menswear | โ | 2.2% (#3) |
| Strong positions | Size guides, blog | Store locations, brand info |
Suitable has more AI visibility than Google visibility in the Netherlands. The AI position does not come from SEO authority. It comes from brand recognition: mentions on Trustpilot, in trade press, on shopping sites and directories.
5. What this means for ecommerce brands
AI search engines distinguish between two types of sources.
| Aspect | Store mention | Knowledge source mention |
|---|---|---|
| When cited? | Where can I buy X? | What is the best X? How do I choose X? |
| What triggers it? | Google Maps, directories, city guides, Trustpilot | In depth content, comparisons, expertise pages |
| Conversion value | Moderate. User already knows the brand | High. User is asking for advice |
| What it needs | Brand name plus location | Content plus external validation (links, mentions) |
The highest conversion value sits in the knowledge source position. If ChatGPT answers "what is the best wrinkle free shirt?" and names your brand, that is a direct product recommendation to a buyer with high intent.
6. What Suitable should do
1. Knowledge base content per product category
Suitable already runs a blog and a knowledge base. Current content is too generic. What is missing are in depth product guides that ChatGPT can use as a source:
- The complete guide to wrinkle free shirts
- Choosing a blazer: which model suits your body type?
- Travel fabric: what is it and which brands do it best?
- Business casual for men: the complete guide
These are exactly the topics where ChatGPT currently cites someone else. A strong guide with expertise signals (brand comparisons, material explanations, style advice) becomes a citable source.
2. Backlinks from fashion authorities
The most cited sources in ChatGPT's menswear answers are fashionunited.nl (82 citations), retailtrends.nl (56), and Trustpilot (61). Links and mentions on this kind of site (trade press, lifestyle media, comparison sites) strengthen Google rankings and feed the AI models at the same time.
Suitable's current backlink profile has almost no editorial links. DR has fallen from 40 to 28 in six months as old and spam links dropped off. New quality links are needed to reverse the trend.
3. Targeted product mentions on third parties
The prompt "what are the best travel fabric brands?" (5,500 vol per month) is a direct opportunity. If a fashion blog or comparison site mentions Suitable in an article about travel fabric shirts, that becomes a source ChatGPT can cite. Same logic for other product specific questions.
7. The broader lesson
"AI visibility is not the same as SEO visibility. You can rank well in ChatGPT on branded questions without any SEO effort at all."
The brands investing now in deep product content and quality backlinks are building a position that gets harder and harder to overtake. AI models cite sources they know. That knowledge is built by the same factors that have driven SEO for decades: relevant content, external authority, consistent brand mentions.
The difference is that the prize now lives in the recommendations ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews make to millions of users every day, not just in Google positions.
